You’ve heard a lot about it. The academy orbits the planet Panzeir. They have regular shockerball tournaments, classes on how to pilot spaceships, and zero gravity days.
“Now boarding for flight to Panzeir Space Academy,” a voice says over the loudspeaker.
You grab your bag, but your mom beckons to you. “Can I speak to you for a second, Dustin?” She pulls you aside. “I’m glad that you got accepted, but please be careful.”
“Careful?”
“Space pirates have been interrupting shipments in a nearby solar system. Some people think that they must be stationed somewhere near Panzeir. Don’t do anything foolish.”
You resist the urge to roll your eyes. “I’ll be just fine, don’t you worry.” You grab your bag and wave a last goodbye to your mom, dad, Justin, and Emma.
Time to board the shuttle.

Once aboard, you see your good friend, Liza, waving to you from the middle of the shuttle. She’s saved you a seat. You stow your carry-on and sit next to her.
Liza glances around and then beckons to you to lean close. “Hey, Dustin, I bought this egg at the flea market yesterday.” She shows you a brightly colored blue and green egg. It looks soft and not at all like a chicken egg. “Can you help me keep it hidden? It hasn’t hatched yet, and I want to see what it is.”
“Liza,” you say slowly, “pets aren’t allowed at the Space Academy.”
She shrugs and tucks the egg back under her shirt. “I know, but it’s so small.”
You’re worried about getting expelled, but Liza is your friend, too.
Just then, a woman in the uniform of the Space Academy walks down the aisle. “What’s under your shirt?” she says. “Contraband?”
